Library Cards |
- Every new student in the Grosse Pointe Public Schools receives a Grosse Pointe library card.
- This library card may be used at both the Grosse Pointe SCHOOL libraries and the PUBLIC libraries.
- Because we keep a copy of each student's card on file, there is no need to bring the card to school on library day.
- If the library card gets lost, please request a new one from the school library, rather than from the public library!
|
Check Out |
- K-1st graders may borrow one book at a time.
- 2nd - 5th graders may borrow 2 books at a time.
- Additional materials may be checked out to accommodate classroom research projects.
- Library staff are glad to offer guidance and may impose an occasional reading requirement in conjunction with library studies. Individual classroom teachers may have their own requirements regarding "just right books." In general, however, students are encouraged to make their own smart choices of books they think they'll enjoy.
|
Renewals |
- Most books may be renewed for another week.
- Exceptions are titles that have a "hold" placed on them by another library patron, or books that are so new and/or popular that there is a horde of eager readers waiting for them.
- Longer or more challenging materials may require additional renewals. These are made on a case-by-case basis.
- Library staff prefers to renew books in hand, rather than in absentia. If a book is actually misplaced rather than unfinished, "renewing" it just delays the frantic search that may be necessary to find it!

Library Record |
With Internet access, you have 24/7 access to your Grosse Pointe library record!
- Go to www.gp.lib.mi.us.
- Login to MY LIBRARY ACCOUNT with library patron's LAST NAME and library card BARCODE.
- Select ITEMS CURRENTLY CHECKED OUT.
- Please note: List will include ALL items borrowed from ALL GP libraries, both school and private!
|
Overdues |
- Library books are due at the next library class, and are stamped with that due date at check out.
- Students receive printed reminders during library class for any books that have not been returned.
- Notices for persistent overdues are mailed home monthly.
- Overdues limit or suspend a student's school-library borrowing privileges, because students may only borrow as many books as they return.
- A current record of check-outs and overdues is always available at www.gp.lib.mi.us by logging on with the borrower's library card barcode.

Lost or Damaged Books |
- Good news! In our experience, LOST BOOKS often aren't. Under the bed, on a home/classroom bookshelf, or in the shadowy depths of the locker/desk are all common hiding places for missing books. While you're searching at home, we'll search our shelves and bins as well, just in case the book snuck back!
- Accidents happen. If a library book is damaged in your care, please bring it to the library's "Book Hospital," where special tools and special skills give a wounded book the best chance for recovery. We promise, we don't bite!
- The library does charge a replacement fee for REALLY LOST or IRREPARABLY DAMAGED BOOKS. The replacement fee is based on the cost to replace the book, so we all really hope that it was a paperback!
- More good news! Replacement fees will be refunded if a lost book is found and returned in good condition before the end of the school year.
AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION...
- Leaky water bottles in backpacks are by far the most common cause of DAMAGED BOOKS, followed by baby siblings and pets.
- Having a special spot at home for library books saves both stress and money!

Library Grades |
- Like all school subjects, library class has a formal, sequential curriculum of concepts and skills that is evaluated to support mastery.
- Each trimester, K-2 library students are graded on application of library skills and concepts, and on appropriate participation in library activities.
- Older students receive an effort grade as well.
- Chronic overdues will be reflected in library grades, since the timely return of library materials is an essential skill for capable and responsible library users!
